Who We Are

Trail Life USA is a Christian Outdoor Adventure, Character, and Leadership Program for boys and young men.

Operating from Troops that are chartered through churches in 48 states, the K-12 program centers on outdoor experiences that build a young man’s skills and allow him to grow on a personal level and as a role model and leader for his peers.

Living the Trail Life is a journey established on timeless values derived from the Bible.

Area Teams and Other Levels of Support
9/28/2016 12:00:01 AM BY Rob Green, Director of Field Operations

My first blog in this series talked about Trail Life USA’s Core Value #7, Volunteer-driven. You might be wondering how that works. In each Area of our country, there is a Trail Life Point Man. He (in a few places, she) got the ball rolling, helping Troops start up and getting the message out.

After that, Point Men began recruiting Area Teams of subject matter experts. The Area Teams are a Troop’s local resource for help.

Got Camping questions – where to go, what to bring, how to start a fire? They’ve got your back. Want advice on planning an exciting program year… and figuring out how to pay for it? They know that stuff, too. What about “beyond our Troop” –  are there Roundtable gatherings, multi-Troop Camporees this fall, leader trainings planned? Once again, the Area Team is your answer.

In many Areas, these support Teams are developed enough to supply a personal mentor/coach for every Troop – these are called Direct Service Advisors. They connect Troop Leaders with whatever they need to be successful – including introducing them to the right subject matter experts on an Area Team to address that specific Troop’s needs.

See below for Levels of Troop Support to see the ways volunteers provide answers. This eliminates the need for long wait times calling some national hotline – your timely, real-world solution is much closer to home.

Levels of Troop Support

  • Yourself - Become educated on everything… then lead others who need the same information!
  • Online resources - Read through the immense information available in TroopTrack. There are Member Forums in TroopTrack and on Facebook loaded with real-time best practices from your peers nationwide! You can also access information at the Trail Life USA website including the FAQ.
  • Other Leaders in your Troop - Ask other Leaders in your Troop who may know the answer.
  • Other Leaders in nearby Troops - Find them on the Troop Locator located at the Trail Life USA website or attend your local Area monthly Trail Leaders’ gathering for ongoing leader training and information updates. If your Area has not started these monthly meetings yet, find your Point Man on the Point Man Locator – same graph as the Troop Locator – and work together to initiate a monthly Trail Leader gathering.
  • Your Troop’s Direct Service Advisor - One has been assigned to be your Troop’s helper – a Coach or Guide for your Leaders.
  • Area Team Specialist - Experienced volunteers who deal with questions on Advancement, Camping, Activities, Finances, Public Relations, and Community Service.
  • Point Man - As your Area Team Chairman, he oversees the Leaders in steps 5 & 6. For now, if you do not know who the Direct Service Advisor or specific Area Team member you need is, your Point Man can connect you with them.
  • Regional Team Leader - Providing oversight, encouragement, and direction to Point Men, our six Team Leaders at this level are also volunteers. They are successful Point Men who are committed to helping further our mission and grow Trail Life USA.
